Circubench
CircuBench was born from a desire to create furniture that doesn't just occupy space, but respects its environment. The primary focus of this project was to utilize materials that are easily accessible, recyclable, and capable of being returned to the supply chain at the end of the furniture's life.
Materials & Process
The component parts of the bench consist of discarded recyclable post-consumer waste, the majority of which was "urban foraged" within a short distance of my home / the studio. By sourcing materials locally and scavenging what others had discarded, CircuBench proves that waste is simply material in the wrong place.
Circular Design Philosophy
The core ethos of this piece is Design for Disassembly. Unlike modern furniture glued permanently together, CircuBench is fixed together to allow for simple deconstruction. This ensures that when the product eventually reaches the end of its lifecycle, the materials can be easily separated and recycled, rather than ending up in a landfill.
Driven by the definition set by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, this project aims to "eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials, and regenerate nature."
FUNCTIONALITY
While designed primarily as an interior piece, a natural water-resistant layer provides light protection, making the bench versatile enough for occasional trips outdoors.
