wastebound

The name WasteBound carries a dual meaning. It refers to materials that were "bound" for the recycling bin but were halted and reused to form something unique. Simultaneously, it describes the physical construction of the piece: waste materials "bound" together under tension.

Materials & Process

The primary components of this table are packaging offcuts—specifically cardboard fabric tubes and honeycomb core cardboard—kindly provided by the packaging facility of Senator Furniture Group.

  • The Core: Industrial cardboard offcuts.

  • The Binding: A single "humble" ratchet strap. Unlike previous projects where materials were found in domestic bins, these were intercepted at the industrial stage, preventing them from becoming waste in the first place.

Circular Design Philosophy

WasteBound replaces adhesives with physics. The brilliance of the ratchet strap is that it provides an abundance of tension to hold the component parts together rigidly. The strap itself was purchased new with the specific intent of reuse; because it is not permanently fixed or glued, it can be unstrapped and used for future creations over and over again. When the table reaches the end of its life, the cardboard returns to the recycling stream, and the strap moves on to its next task.

Functionality

Despite being made of "loose" parts, the tension creates a solid, reliable surface. It serves as a perfect companion to a lounge area—a conversation piece that proves waste is often just a resource waiting for a different function.
