CircuShelf

As the sister product to CircuBench, CircuShelf represents a new challenge: the first foray into wall-mounted furniture with integrated technology. Ideally suited for the "Binning to Winning" ethos, this project demonstrates that waste materials can support not just weight, but also light.

Materials & Process

The primary structure is formed from 'urban foraged' cardboard—specifically discarded JVC TV boxes—chosen for their structural rigidity. The lighting components are a blend of high-end and high-waste:

  • The Structure: Upcycled corrugated cardboard.

  • The Diffusers: Reused Sharwoods curry jars and lids from my home recycling bin.

  • The Technology: Two discreet 1W LED modules provided by Lightmaster-Direct.

Lighting effects

CircuShelf is adaptable to the mood of the room, offering three distinct lighting configurations:

  1. Clear Glass Diffusers: Creates a biophilic energy, diffusing light in a way reminiscent of flowing water.

  2. Frosted Glass Diffusers: A softer, ambient glow.

  3. No Diffusers: A traditional, focused downlight appearance.

Circular Design Philosophy

Consistency is crucial. Like every product in this series, CircuShelf is designed for disassembly. It relies entirely on cardboard-to-cardboard joints and mechanical fixings to secure it to the wall. No adhesives are used, ensuring that at the end of its life, the electronic components can be harvested for reuse, while the cardboard and glass return simply to the recycling bin.
