OUTbox
OutBox is built on the belief that when you buy a product, the packaging should be seen as a "secondary product" in its own right. It challenges the standard consumer experience by offering a "Buy One, Get One Free" approach: the device you purchased, and the furniture required to use it. This project specifically explores how a shipping box can be a complimentary accessory to the technology it once protected.
Materials & Process
Unlike designs that hide the origin of their materials, OutBox makes a conscious effort to celebrate them.
The Material: The stand is engineered specifically for standard 6-7mm double wall cardboard, utilizing the internal fluting of the material to provide maximum structural rigidity for heavier laptops.
The Aesthetic: I have a particular affinity for celebrating the artwork on the boxes I have foraged, resulting in each OutBox product having a unique appearance whilst giving an inclination to the cardboards past life
The Build: Created from a single sheet of reclaimed cardboard, the stand uses precise folds to achieve the necessary height for ergonomic viewing.
Circular Design Philosophy
OutBox is a "Box-to-Product" transition that requires no secondary materials—no glue, no plastic, and no additional fixings. It is a mono-material solution that acknowledges its origins. By celebrating the original box's branding, we add a layer of value to the "waste," encouraging the user to keep and use the stand rather than discarding the material.
Functionality
Designed for the modern mobile worker, OutBox is a flat-pack solution that can be carried in a laptop sleeve. It raises the screen to eye level, reducing neck strain and improving airflow to the device.
When used in tandem with PhoneBox, the two create the perfect synchronized work setup. Whether at home or on the move (such as a train or a cafe), this duo ensures your primary and secondary screens are positioned for peak productivity, all while utilizing nothing but upcycled waste.
