phonebox
PhoneBox is a testament to simplicity. It is designed to be the most accessible product in the Will's Wednesday Work collection, encouraging anyone to participate in the circular economy. The design premise is straightforward: a functional object that can be created from many of the cardboard boxes you likely discard in your recycling bin, using nothing more than a pencil, ruler, and craft knife.
Materials & Process
The beauty of PhoneBox lies in its minimal material requirements. It requires only a single sheet of single-ply cardboard measuring approximately 80x370mm.
Source: "Urban foraged" packaging or standard household recycling.
Double Upcycling: Some iterations of PhoneBox feature cardboard that has been upcycled twice—such as a Sharp TV box that was previously part of the ReDesk project six years ago—showcasing true material longevity.
Production: While originally a DIY hand-cut project, the design was also adapted for laser cutting for the London Design Festival.
Circular Design Philosophy
This product strips circular design down to its basics. By using a mono-material (cardboard) and avoiding all adhesives/glues, the product is 100% recyclable. It relies purely on geometry—specifically the strength of the "humble triangle"—and precise folding to maintain its form.
Functionality
Despite being the simplest creation in the range, it is often the most useful. Its flat-pack nature makes it the perfect travel companion, easily sliding into a bag for watching films on the train, while being sturdy enough for permanent residence on a desk or bedside table.
