NEXUDO
NexUdo embodies the philosophy of moving from "Binning to Winning"—transforming discarded materials into objects of beauty and utility. The project is built on the belief that waste is simply a resource in the wrong place. By reimagining the contents of a standard recycling bin, NexUdo proves that the components for your next piece of furniture are likely already in your home.
Materials & Process
The materials for this desk were exclusively "urban foraged" from my own home recycling or within a 200-meter radius of my London studio.
The Structure: Repurposed cardboard boxes (originally from brands like Halfords, JVC, and John Lewis).
The Fixings: Tin cans, lids & carriage bolts. These accessible materials were selected to demonstrate that sustainable design doesn't require exotic resources—just a change in perspective.
Circular Design Philosophy
Consistency is key to the Will's Wednesday Work series. NexUdo is formed using no adhesives, relying instead on reusable mechanical fixings. This design for disassembly ensures that once the desk completes its service, the cardboard and cans can easily be separated and placed directly into domestic recycling bins to become something new. While recycling is good, reuse is championed here as a far less energy-intensive alternative.
FUNCTIONALITY
The design goes beyond a flat surface. The desk features hollow upcycled cardboard legs which provide structural integrity while offering unique storage solutions for magazines, books, and laptops. Additionally, the structure acts as a trellis for trailing indoor plants, embodying the spirit of growth and renewal that defines the project.
